All-State Jazz Band Audition Procedures

MOAJE All-State Jazz Audition Procedures

All auditions are played with backing tracks. There is approximately 30 seconds between each etude on the track. Wind players will audition for one judge in the prelim round and then a panel in the callback round. All rooms will have callbacks. Students are free to leave after the final callbacks have been announced.
Students need to fill out the Student Ensemble/Seating Preference Form prior to auditioning.
Callbacks and Final Results will be posted HERE.

Prelim Round
Winds will play in this order
  1. Swing Etude
  2. Latin Etude
  3. Now Hear This!
    1. Play the melody
    2. Play 12 bars of improvisation

Rhythm Section will play in this order
  1. Swing Etude
  2. Latin Etude
  3. Now Hear This!
    1. Play the melody (drums play melodic content on the drumset)
    2. Comp/Play time for 12 bars
    3. Improvise for 12 bars
  4. Drums only - Play from the Drumset Styles page as requested from the judge

Callback Round
Winds will play in this order
  1. Swing OR Latin Etude (Judge’s Discretion)
  2. Cantaloupe Island
    1. Play the melody only one time through (Skip both 1st endings)
    2. Improvise for 16 bars
  3. Sight reading etude provided once in room

Rhythm Section will play in this order
  1. Swing OR Latin Etude (Judge’s Discretion)
  2. Cantaloupe Island
    1. Play the melody, drums play melodic content on the set (Skip both 1st endings)
    2. Comp/Play Time for 16 bars
    3. Improvise for 16 bars
  3. Sight reading Etude provided once in room
  4. Drums only - Play from the Drumset Styles page if requested from the judge
